ARTS - RADIO - Bang to rights. By Sue Arnold.
Radio 5 Live: Smoking Gun.
OF ALL THE programmes marking the first anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre in Colorado, it was James Silver's interview with one of the 76 directors of the National Rifle Association for Radio 5 Live that made one appreciate what a Herculean labour the US anti-gun lobbyists have set themselves.
The NRA staunchly and vociferously defends the Second Amendment, which states that every American has the right to keep and bear arms. The slightest suggestion of gun control makes Dave Workman, a certified firearms instructor, bridle with cold fury.
In clipped tones, Workman proudly told Silver that for 30 years he has had a licence to own a concealed firearm. Where, asked Silver, does he keep his guns? `Where I can find 'em,' replied Workman, as laconic as Dirty Harry.
The overriding impression you received of American gun fanatics is that they're little boys who have watched too many westerns and gangster movies and they relish the language of violence as much having the weapons themselves.
`The NRA hits hardest, fastest and most effectively from behind circled wagons,' Workman boasted to Silver. It would be funny if it wasn't so chilling.
